What’s Better Than a Bank Holiday?
When I worked as a teacher, most bank holidays were swallowed up by school holidays. So now they're a pleasant surprise.
‘You mean, this one’s on the government?’
In our busy culture, rest has fallen out of favour - its only necessary to help us work well.
But we don’t only need rest to fuel our work. We also need it like a kid ‘needs’ an ice lolly –because it’s good.
God worked, and then he rested (Genesis 2:2-3). “Go and do likewise,” is the resounding song of the Bible.
But there’s something different about bank holidays. Weekends feel like they’re earned. Annual leave has to be used carefully because most of us don’t have too much of it.
And then this little gem!
An un-earned gift which leaves our annual leave account completely intact. Who said there was no such thing as a free lunch?
Well, certainly no Christian.
Because having our sins freely forgiven and being declared righteous despite of our spiritual record, is what it means to freely enter God’s rest.
For anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Hebrews 4:10
This is no weekend rest – not a rest that we earned with our works. It’s just a free gift (Ephesians 2:8-9).
It’s no annual leave rest – there’s no limit, there’s no timer counting down to when we have to return to work to earn our boss’ approval.
This is free, unconditional, unlimited, eternal rest.
And so while the bank holiday will end, the rest you have in Christ won't. Ever.
So it's great that many of us have some extra time today to stop and remember the rest Christ has won for us.
