When I grow up
Let me tell you what I’m going to be when I grow up.
I’m not talking about my childhood dreams (FYI - I haven’t made it as a ballerina as planned).
I’m not talking about my hopes for the next few years either. As I head towards my 30s, there’s pressure to become a ‘proper grown-up’ as soon as possible.
What I’m talking about has nothing to do with ticking off ‘adult’ milestones like marriage or a mortgage.
These may well be good things. But what I’m going to be when I grow up is far better.
Here’s how the Bible puts it:
‘Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.’ 1 John 3:2
When I grow up, God is going to make me just like his perfect Son, Jesus Christ.
And this isn’t just about my future. It’s a wonderful promise for all of us as we follow Jesus together. As the church it’s our future.
‘We will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.’ Ephesians 4:15
Look around at your next church meeting. God is growing us all, together.
Maybe you’re a brain surgeon and a mum of four. Maybe you’re unemployed and have just received a bad diagnosis from the doctor. God’s plans for your growth are happening right now.
Your current circumstances are preparing you for this future (2 Corinthians 4:17). God is working in the details of your life now, to grow you into who you’ll be then (Romans 8:28-29).
Whatever happens in life, we can look ahead with confidence in God’s promise. When we grow up, we’re going to be like Jesus.
