Under the Sun

The ground shone purple
Reflecting the preschooler’s paint palette sky
And by the river
Animal tracks traipsed west
Playing hide and seek with the sun

A hundred flickering lighters lined the horizon
Saluting the fleeting blackbird ballad
Sung for the rising of the great, grey, elephant toenail moon

And the moment the sun slipped from view
Heaven winked and the Earth glowed for a moment
The lights last laugh echoed through meek shadows
Waiting patiently for…

For nothing-ness

And so the day faded into oblivion
Just like it had so many times before
Just like it did the time you joined it

This world didn’t forget you
It never noticed you in the first place
